Strasbourg

Alsace

Strasbourg charming, livable city of Alsace is the place for pedestrians, bikes, modern trams and students (of the University). Just 2.5 hrs from Paris with TGV from the Gare de l'Est. If you'd like to stay a short time start your visit with the Cathedral walk 15 minutes from the train station past the Hotel Vendome, rue du Maire Kuss, cross the river, walk to the rue du 22 novembre all the way to place Kleber, walk to rue des Arcades, turn left on rue des Hallebandes.

Strasbourg Cathedral Stand front of the Cathedral and admire the Gothic style of the Cathedral. Started to build in 1176 and not finished until 1429. You enter the Cathedral it is free.

Excellent cuisine from Alsace. Try out :

  • Choucroute garnie (sauerkraut and sausages)
  • Baeckeoffe (sliced potatoes, onions, cubes of lamb, beef, pork marinated the day before with Alsatian white wine, berries)
  • Rosti (grated potatoes and fry on a pan)
  • Tarte flambee (thin crust with onions and bacon)
  • Tarte alsacienne (fruit tart).

The Alsatian wines are mostly white: Riesling, Sylvaner, Gewurztraminer, Muscat. For red wines we have the Pinot Noir. One sparking wine the Cremant d'Alsace.

S'Thomas Stuebel 5, rue du Bouclier. Tel : 03 88 22 34 82. Walking 7 minutes direction from the Cathedrale turn left on rue Merciere, turn right on rue du vieux Marche aux Poissons, right on rue Gutenberg, continue on Grand'Rue, left at rue du Bouclier.

La Corde a linge 2, place Benjamin. 03 88 22 15 17. Open 7 days with a service non stop 11:45am to 11pm.Very nice decor with a terrasse. Walking 8 minutes direction from the Cathedrale turn left on rue Merciere, turn right on rue du vieux Marche aux Poissons, right on rue Gutenberg, continue on Grand'Rue, turn left at rue du Fosse des Tanneurs. Specialties of spaetzles (kind of noodles).
