Driving in France

Driving outside Paris you will be on the Peripherique. That's the major main road encircling Paris, the peripherique interieur going counterclockwise and the peripherique exterieur going clockwise. It could be extremely busy during rush hours before 9am and after 5pm. Electronic signs will mention how is the traffic fluide,(clear) or bouchon (jammed).

There are five types of road in France: A (expressways), N (nationale), D (departementale) and the smallest C. You have to pay the different highways (better to have cash with you).

if your car breaks down on an expressway, pull your car, put your emergency triangle and find the closest emergency phone.

Regarding the gaz in France is quite expensive around 1,50 €/l. It can be cheaper when you are outside the city. Invest in a road map called Michelin available at the gaz station or bookstore!

Tips for driving in Paris

Parking isn't easy in Paris. Meters and parking machines use parking cards (cartes de stationnement) where can be bought at any cafe. Display your ticket on the dashboard.

Make reservations before you go. Paris car rental could be done by internet and you could find better rates. Much better to rent for a full week. It's cheaper to rent a manual car. They add the tax 19.6% and an Airport tax. A car insurance will be added at your car rental agreement.

Park for free on Sunday, national holidays, and certain residential areas in August.

Very heavy traffic in Paris. Some streets are so narrow it's sometimes difficult for a visitor to drive. Street signs aren't easy to spot. You should be careful with motorbikes coming right and left.

There are few major roundabouts around the Arc de Triomphe, place de la Bastille and Place de la Concorde. Stay on the outside lane to take your exit.

Speed limit dependly on the road you are: 130 kph (80 mph), 110 kph (70 mph)on route nationale and 50 kph (30 mph) in town.
